Nicolas De Santis is an entrepreneur who has dedicated years to advancing sustainability and the greater good of humanity. He leads the strategic future consultancy, the Megavisionary Centre for Future Worldbuilding®, and presides over the Gold Mercury International Award, a prestigious honour bestowed upon global leaders and distinguished individuals for their contributions to peace and global governance.
Just a few days ago, Nicolas had the profound honour of personally presenting the Gold Mercury International Award to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. As His Holiness approaches his 90th birthday this July, he rarely grants interviews, making this encounter even more significant. Recognised as one of the most influential spiritual figures of the 20th and 21st centuries, the Dalai Lama was chosen at the age of just two to become the spiritual and political leader of Tibetan Buddhism.
“It was a great honour for me and for Gold Mercury. We are truly grateful,” said De Santis.
The award ceremony took place in Dharamshala, India, where the Dalai Lama resides in the Himalayan foothills. “We asked how he would prefer to receive the award and invited him to London, but he no longer travels. So, we journeyed over 10,000 miles to reach him,” De Santis explained. “We flew to Delhi, then travelled north into the Indian Himalayas to the mountain town of Dharamshala.”
There, in a setting of serenity and reverence, the Gold Mercury Award was formally presented to His Holiness. “When you stand next to him, you feel a profound radiance of love and compassion,” De Santis recounted. “His messages are centred on empathy and forgiveness.”
In his Award Acceptance speech, the Dalai Lama spoke about the foundational role of love in human development, beginning as early as the womb. He emphasised the importance of the mother as the first source of compassion in our lives, teaching us the values of care and empathy through her example.
“In today’s world, we need that kind of compassion and energy more than ever,” De Santis concluded.
